The City of Today

City Of The Future - Or City Of The Trendy Present - Charles Siegel (Preservation Institute Blog, December 14, 2006)

Writes Siegel:

If you want a design that endures, then design a city that is a good place to live today. No one has ever created a livable city or an enduring design by trying to design a city of the future.

...that offers something you cannot get elsewhere like historical housing or unique urban design.

Not replicating the strip malls or vinyl single family homes present elswhere.

Create the Cities of the Future today.

This is a very interesting point. I would also contend this means that in building for today we are not building for 100 years ago.

Furthermore, I would contend that some vision of the future is necessary in planning. for instance it is likely the role of the automobile will be diminishing in the future. Hence the need to stop building strip malls today.
