Yeah, but would they vote to pay for and establish a local historic district/preservation ordinance?
Even if they lose the Argonne house, they would be acting to preserve the rest of the area.
Otherwise, as the Mayor has stated, they can't stop the demolitions.
Remember Clayton. Same story, different town. We don't see folks there seeking historic district/preservation ordinance status.
Possible conclusion? They don't want to limit their individual property rights.
Property rights? Yes, the same argument could be made for demolishing the Century Building. City Ordinances infringe upon property rights for a number of reasons. For instance, I can't burn trash in my backyard, even though its my own property.
Owning property in a community presupposes that you follow the laws of the community. If the community values preservation then too bad for the McMansions. This is a utilitarian argument, but hey, its 3AM and it works.

That's the point, both Kirkowwd and Clayton are soft on preservation. And the question is do they want to toughen up on it?
